Kal Penn Writing a Memoir
The 'Designated Survivor' actor's book will be published in 2019.
Kal Penn, known for his role in 2004's Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle as well as his political activism, is penning a memoir, publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt announced Wednesday. The still-untitled collection of essays will be published in 2019.
In the book, which aims to be both funny and inspiring, Penn will write about “his unique 21st century American success story” and “the challenges of navigating Hollywood, and his unusual sabbatical from actor to White House staffer.”
New Jersey native Penn, 40, is best known as Kumar from the three Harold and Kumar movies, but his extensive credits also include roles on the TV series House and How I Met Your Mother.
He currently is a series regular on ABC's Designated Survivor. From 2009-2011, Penn interrupted his acting career to do two stints as the associate director in the White House Office of Public Engagement for President Barack Obama.
Audible will simultaneously release the audio book version of the memoir with Penn narrating.
