'SNL' Tackles "Naughty List Members" Matt Lauer, Roy Moore, Al Franken in Cold Open
"A toy? Like the one Matt Lauer gave his co-worker?"
NBC's Saturday Night Live got into the Christmas spirit during the latest installment's cold open over the weekend.
Castmember Kenan Thompson, as a mall Santa, told a young boy who asked about disgraced former Sen. Al Franken, "You could say he's on the 'naughty' list this year." Franken on Thursday resigned from the Senate amid sexual misconduct allegations.
"What about Roy Moore?" the young boy sitting on Santa's lap asked, referring to the Alabama GOP Senate candidate who is also currently embroiled in sexual misconduct accusations against him. To which Santa's elf assistant, played by castmember Kate McKinnon said, "It's not really a list, it's more of a registry." She also instructed Thompson's character that "in this climate" he probably shouldn't refer to her as "Sugar Plum."
"Is President Trump on the naughty list?" another little girl asked. "Well, Santa likes to stay out of political matters," he replied. "Our president may have said or done a few naughty things." The elf chimed in, "Nineteen accusers. Google it," referring to the women who have come forward with accusations against the president.
When Santa told the girl, named Jessica, that there's something to be learned from those on the 'naughty' list, she said that she did in fact learn a lesson from the news this year: "I learned that if you admit you did something wrong you get in trouble, but if you deny it, they let you keep your job!"
Later in the skit, Santa asked another child, "You want a toy for Christmas?" To which the kid replied, "A toy? Like the one Matt Lauer gave his co-worker?"
The longtime NBC host was fired Nov. 29 after a complaint about "inappropriate sexual behavior."
The bit ended on a happier note, with McKinnon's character comforting a young girl. "I know that things seem particularly insane. Like truly mind-bendingly insane, and we seem to have lost all perspective on what's naughty or nice," she said. "I know," the girl replied, "I've seen Fox News."
Continued McKinnon: "But as bad as things might seem, I promise you, it will be okay. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, maybe not for another three years, 42 days, and 24 minutes — but eventually good people will fix our country."
