Politics and Pop Culture Collide At 'DC in D.C.' Event Next Month
Panel discussions about LGBTQ issues, race and PTSD will be held ahead of the world premiere of the CW's 'Black Lightning.'
Washington D.C. will become Washington DC Entertainment next month, as Warner Bros. Television, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment team up for DC in D.C., a two-day event across Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend intended to promote discussion of contemporary issues using DC’s superheroes and comics as a conversation starter.
Following panels and screenings happening at the Newseum across Jan. 12-13, the event will conclude with a red carpet premiere of the CW’s Black Lightning at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, where the premiere episode will be followed by a Q&A session featuring stars including Cress Williams, China Anne McClain, Nafessa Williams and Christine Adams alongside executive producers Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil. (Those not attending the invite-only event can still attend a Newseum screening that evening.)
Panels planned for the weekend include discussions about race and DC heroes (“The Many Shades of Heroism,” with John Ridley, Alice Randall and Black Lightning’s Cress Williams speaking), LGBTQ inclusion (“The Pride of DC,” including comic writers Marguerite Bennett, Steve Orlando and Mark Russell alongside Arrow show runner Greg Berlanti) and post-traumatic stress disorder (“The Aftermath,” led by Mister Miracle comic writer Tom King).
More information about the event can be found at the DC in D.C. 2018 website, with additional information about programming to be released in coming weeks.
