TV Ratings: 'Empire' and 'Star' Fall Finales Give Fox Wednesday Win

NBC's Golden Globes anniversary special does OK, while 'Survivor' and 'Modern Family' both post strong episodes.

The future of the Fox Broadcasting Company may be up in the air after Thursday's news that parent company 21st Century Fox was selling off almost all its other TV assets to the Walt Disney Company, but at least its last night before the official announcement brought a big win.

The fall finale of Empire was slightly improved from the previous week's episode, ticking up to a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49 and nearly 6 million viewers. In the key demo, that easily ranks as the top telecast of the night, topping out closest competitor Survivor (1.7 adults) on CBS — where it was the lone new telecast of the night.

Fox also aired the fall finale of Star. Empire's sister series was also slightly improved, fetching a 1.3 rating among adults 18-49. Fox won the night in the key demo, though it did cede the 9 p.m. hour to ABC and its even outing of Modern Family (1.7 adults) and lifted American Housewife (1.3 adults).

Elsewhere on ABC, The Goldbergs (1.6 adults) and Speechless (1.1 adults) held steady, while Designated Survivor saw some improvement — inching up to a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49.

NBC offered up a two-hour special for the Golden Globes' upcoming 75th anniversary. It garnered a fair amount of business, averaging a 0.8 rating in the key demo and 4.4 million viewers.
