The special, airing on TNT and TBS, plummets 30 percent in the face of the NFL.

Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards was always going to have a rough go of it, facing the NFL after several years without the stiff competition, but the 2018 drop is still quite dramatic.

The awards, simulcast on TNT and TBS, averaged just 2.8 million viewers. That's down more than 30 percent from the 3.9 million gross of the previous year.

It was not an especially easy night to air one of the typically softer awards shows. The NFC Championship Game was wrapping up at the same time with an average 42.8 million viewers. Still, the SAG Awards are becoming more of a missed opportunity with audiences — considering the talent-heavy ceremony runs at a brisk two hours.

The SAG Awards have been suffering from a steep downward trajectory in recent years. The show pulled as many as 5 million viewers as recently as 2013, but a brief move to Saturday nights dampened the annual haul. The show returned to Sundays in 2017.
