Chinese consumers have spent billions of dollars shopping online for anything from diapers to diamonds on "Singles Day," a day of promotions that has grown into the world's biggest e-commerce event.

China's largest e-commerce giant, Alibaba Group, said Sunday sales by the thousands of retailers on its platforms for the 24-hour period on Saturday amounted to 168.3 billion yuan ($25.3 billion), setting a new record for the company. It was 39 percent more than sales clocked last year on Alibaba's platforms of 120.7 billion yuan.

By comparison, American shoppers last year spent more than $5 billion shopping online on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday, according to Adobe, which tracks such data. Shoppers also spent $3.39 billion on Cyber Monday last year, the largest single online shopping day in the U.S., Adobe said.

In China, Alibaba's main rival, online retailer JD.com, did not provide a sales figure only for Saturday but said cumulative sales over the 11-day period starting on Nov. 1 through Saturday totaled 127 billion yuan ($19 billion).

Starting at midnight Friday, diamonds, Chilean frozen salmon, tires, diapers, beer, shoes, handbags, and appliances were shipped out from JD.com's distribution centers on trucks bound for deliveries across China.

China is already the world's largest e-commerce market and the share of online shopping that makes up all consumer spending grows every year. Boston Consulting Group forecasts online spending will rise by 20 percent a year, hitting $1.6 trillion by 2020, compared with 6 percent growth for off-line retail.

Singles Day was begun by Chinese college students in the 1990s as a version of Valentine's Day for people without romantic partners.

Zhang Jingjing, a 30-year-old clerk for an engineering company, prepared for Singles Day by building a shopping list on Alibaba's retail platform Tmall and watching for when prices dip. She then clicks and snags a long-sought item at a discount.

"I have often emptied my 'shopping cart' on Singles Day," Zheng said. "I have been watching those goods for a long time and know very well their original prices."

The spending gives a boost to the ruling Communist Party's efforts to nurture consumer-based economic growth and reduce reliance on trade and investment. China has 731 million internet users, up 6 percent from 2016, according to government statistics.

Spain Catalonia: Barcelona rally urges prisoners’ release

Spain Catalonia: Barcelona rally urges prisoners' release

Media playback is unsupported on your device
Media captionHuge pro-independence rally in Barcelona

Three-quarters of a million people have rallied in Barcelona to protest against Spain's detention of Catalan independence leaders, police estimate.

They shone phone torches in unison at sunset as calls were made to free eight regional ministers and two grassroots campaign leaders being held on remand.

Some of the detainees will be included on the list of a Catalan separatist party at next month's snap election.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is to visit the city on Sunday.

In another development, Barcelona's mayoress has condemned pro-independence leaders.

    • Reality Check: Would Catalonia be a viable country?
    • Basque leaders worry about Catalan chaos

The Catalan parliament declared independence last month following an unrecognised referendum on independence from Spain.

Madrid responded by dissolving the parliament and calling a regional election on 21 December.

Since the crackdown by Madrid, Catalonia's sacked President Carles Puigdemont has gone into self-imposed exile in Belgium, and his top allies have been prosecuted.

A lawyer whose firm represents two of his imprisoned former ministers told BBC News their situation had been made worse by Mr Puigdemont's decision to flee.

    Prisoners and elections

    James Reynolds, BBC News, Barcelona

The pro-independence movement has proven its ability to mobilise large numbers of demonstrators. Many came to this latest protest from small towns and villages in Catalonia – a sign of the movement's reach.

Their immediate aim is to call for the release of the eight politicians and two activists remanded in custody on charges of sedition and rebellion. The authorities in Madrid insist that the case is purely a matter for the courts, but the detention of politicians and activists does have a political impact. Imprisonment may have served to increase their popularity. It may galvanise the pro-independence movement as the regional election approaches.

The pro-independence camp wants to win a clear parliamentary majority. That would allow their side to have another go at trying to break away from Spain. But the pro-union camp, which represents the other half of Catalan society, will also campaign vigorously.

    'We are a republic!'

Protesters marched behind a banner declaring "We are a republic" and carried placards declaring the 10 detainees political prisoners.

Media playback is unsupported on your device
Media captionHere's what protesters in Catalonia are singing about

The sacked former ministers are being investigated for alleged rebellion and sedition, while the two activists were arrested over a mass protest before the referendum.

There were performances and speeches to the crowd. Protesters chanted "Puigdemont for president" and a cellist played a traditional Christmas carol, The Song of the Birds, which is associated with Catalans driven into political exile.

The left-wing ERC party, a key ally of Mr Puigdemont, has announced that some of the prisoners, including party leader Oriol Junqueras, as well as some of the sacked ministers who also went to Belgium, will stand on its electoral list.

However, the ERC has rejected a call from Mr Puigdemont to fight the election as part of a single pro-independence bloc with other parties – as they did in 2015.

A recent opinion poll in Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia suggests that the ERC will win the biggest share of the vote in December.

    Image copyright AFP

The Spanish prime minister is to make his first appearance in Catalonia since implementing direct rule two weeks ago.

He is expected to address a meeting of supporters of his centre-right Popular Party, who firmly want Catalonia to remain a part of Spain.

Ada Colau, who was elected mayoress in 2015 on an anti-capitalist platform and whose party (a merger of left-wing parties) is standing in the regional parliamentary election for the first time, said leaders of the independence movement had "tricked the population for their own interests".

    Image copyright EPA
Image caption Ms Colau, seen here kissing her baby, has kept her distance from both separatists and unionists

"They've provoked tensions and carried out a unilateral independence declaration which the majority do not want," she told a meeting of her Catalunya en Comú (English: Catalonia in Common) party.

What Do You Want Everyone To Know, According To Your Zodiac Sign?

We might THINK we know someone, but in reality, everyone acts differently behind closed doors. Everyone keeps somewhat of a mask on around others, and can finally take it off once they are alone. People are complex creatures, so we might not ever fully know someone, or even totally know ourselves. At some point, we have to accept this fact and love ourselves and others as deeply as we can.

With that said, you can tell a lot about a person by their zodiac sign, such as personality traits, weaknesses, strengths, etc. Now, we aren’t claiming that everyone fits their sign to a T or that zodiac signs are the surest way of getting to know someone, but it can help you know a little bit more about him or her.

If you want to learn more about yourself and others, read on to find out what everyone wants you to know, according to their zodiac sign.

What Every Zodiac Sign Wants You To Know

    Aries

An Aries may get into an argument with you, but they love you too much to stay mad at you for long. They are hot-headed, short-tempered, spirited people, and can let their energy and passion get the best of them sometimes. Aries love a good, old-fashioned competition, and they don’t like losing or being told what to do. However, Aries loves their friends and family deeply, and would protect them at any cost. Despite how overbearing and self-centered they can be, they do have a big heart underneath their tough exterior.

    Taurus

Taurus has a great memory and will never forget you as long as they live. Taurus are loyal friends and partners, and will stand by your side no matter what. They tend to be a bit bull-headed, but it’s only because they feel comfortable doing things a certain way and have quite an aversion to change.

    Gemini

Geminis just want to be loved and understood. Even the high-energy, friendly, outgoing Gemini can get down in the dumps when people say she doesn’t care about them or is self-centered. For some reason, Geminis get a bad rap, but we’re here to set the record straight. Geminis care deeply about their loved ones, but they sometimes have difficulty showing their emotions. They live to have fun in life and not take things too seriously, because they know any day could be our last.

    Cancer

A Cancer has a really hard time trusting people, so when they do, don’t make them regret it. Cancer wears their heart on their sleeve and gets hurt easily. People take advantage of their kindness quite often, but they want you to know that their kindness isn’t a weakness, and to either be honest with them or don’t bother talking to them. Cancers value loyalty and trust above all else.

    Leo

This fiery sign doesn’t hold back, and enjoys being in the spotlight and being in charge. However, they also have big hearts and will give more than they take. Leos don’t want people to take advantage of their overly generous nature. They make wonderful friends, but Leos often find themselves in one-sided friendships and relationships due to their kindness.

    Virgo

Virgos want extremely loyal friends; they too are extremely loyal. Virgos have a hard time making friends because they want intelligent, deep conversations with people, which is hard to find in our shallow world. Virgos often keep to themselves unless someone captures their mind and heart, and when this happens, they tend to forget all logic and fall deeply for that person.

    Libra

Libras know more than you realize and think more than they speak. Libras are natural peacekeepers and humanitarians, and this world full of injustice deeply hurts them. However, they keep most of their thoughts to themselves so that people won’t get too much information from them. They are guarded, but friendly people.

    Scorpio

Scorpios help others, even when they are secretly dealing with their own problems. A Scorpio might seem mysterious and aloof, but they dearly love their close friends and family and would do anything for them. They can become vengeful, however, if you get on their bad side, so make sure to never cross them.

    Sagittarius

Sagittarius will always stand strong in their own views. This is a very free-spirited, passionate sign, and they don’t like feeling tied down or pent up. They like to roam, see new things, and go on adventures. They are not swayed easily and prefer to stand alone than ride in a pack.

    Capricorn

When a Capricorn wants something, nothing will stand in their way. Capricorns, like Taurus, are also known for being hard-headed and doing things their way all the time. However, this gets them far in life because they know what they’re after and won’t stop until they have it.

    Aquarius

An Aquarius does not judge and is more interested in knowing who you really are. They are an open-minded, conversational sign that could sit in a coffee shop for hours with you talking about life and sharing interesting stories. They might not always be around when you need them because they are free-spirited too, but they will always take time to listen to what’s on your mind.

    Pisces

Pisces wants peace and will avoid conflict at all costs. Pisces is a very sensitive, gentle sign, and doesn’t do well with confrontation. They like to daydream about different lands and worlds and often “check out” of this one when they get stressed, bored, or frustrated with it all.

So, there you have it – a few tidbits about each sign that should give you a better idea about yourself, your partner, your friends, and your family (if you know their signs). Like we said before, zodiac signs don’t tell the whole story, but they certainly can give us a glimpse into someone’s inner personality.

How to Use The “Happy Chemicals” In Your Brain To Improve Your Mood

“When your brain releases one of these chemicals, you feel good: dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, endorphins.” – Loretta G. Breuning, PhD

Thanks to the Heavens and Universe above for advances in neuroscience. Did you know that Aristotle, who is widely considered one of history’s greatest philosophers, believed the brain was “a secondary organ that served as a cooling agent for the heart?” In fact, Aristotle believed that all intelligence came from the heart.

Indeed, more has been discovered about the brain in the last two decades than in all previous years combined. And there’s still more to learn.

One particularly exciting field within the realm of neuroscientist is the study of brain chemicals, or neurochemistry. Neurochemistry is defined as “the study of neurochemicals, including neurotransmitters and other molecules.”

When we discuss our “happy chemicals,” we’re referring to four neurotransmitters: dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, and oxytocin.

We’re going to have a lot of fun in this article (I know I had a great time writing it!) because we’re going to talk about naturally increasing these chemicals. (As a side-note, I’ve tried some of these “experiments” myself and have felt much better as a result!)

To perhaps a bit of chagrin, we’re not going to delve too much into the science of it all – something that would take closer to 800,000 words than 800. Nope, we’re going with the always reliable K.I.S.S. approach.

    Let’s get after it!

A (super) brief look at the four chemicals

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter made up of the amino acid tryptophan – and it’s commonly found in turkey. Serotonin helps to regulate appetite, learning, mood, sexual drive, and sleep.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that’s also synthesized from tryptophan (it’s a good day for turkey lovers!) Dopamine influences emotional responses, the brain’s reward and pleasure centers, and body movement.

Oxytocin is a brain chemical that is manufactured, stored and secreted by the pituitary gland. Also called the “love chemical,” oxytocin is crucial in developing and maintaining all relationships, from intimate to platonic and everything in between.

Endorphins are the brain’s natural opioids. They are “endogenous opioid neuropeptides” and hormones. Endorphins create feelings of euphoria and are also effective painkillers.

    Changing happy chemicals

Changing the chemistry of your brain is not an overnight process. It takes a bit of time to establish new habits. But this period is probably much, much shorter than you think.

Loretta G. Breuning, Ph.D., and author of Meet Your Happy Chemicals advises her clients to allow 45 days before seeing significant changes in their thought processes and behaviors.

A month and a half? Not bad for a happier brain. While a relatively short period, it’s not an easy transformation. Why? Because our brains will resist any attempt to reprogram its innate wiring. Our brain loves habits, even if they’re unhealthy.

So, Dr. Breuning provides three key pieces of advice during this 45-day period:

    1. Do not judge yourself

Your brain needs 45 days of repetition for a newly-formed habit to feel “normal.” You will experience discomfort. Breathe deep, practice acceptance, and stay on course!

    2. Make peace with your “unhappy” chemicals

“Unhappy” chemicals serve important purposes. Namely, these compounds are responsible for our survival. They also help the brain communicate and are essential to its standard programming.

    3. Choose new habits wisely.

Quite naturally, do not develop or continue “illegal, immoral, or fattening” habits. You’ll see what we’re talking about shortly. In short, “Too much of a good thing is often bad. Good and bad feelings flow at once at your brain decides which choice promotes your well-being,” hence the importance of habits.

How to Use The “Happy Chemicals” In Your Brain To Improve Your Mood

You’re all probably wondering “What do I need to do?” Great question. We’re going to make it super simple! Using research (which we cite at the end of each article), we’re going to discuss how to increase these happy chemicals with nutrition, and other lifestyle choices.

    Let’s go one-by-one.

    Serotonin

Diet and Nutrition: Eggs, cheese, tofu, pineapples, salmon, nuts and seeds, turkey, leafy greens, and cruciferous veggies. Vitamins B6, B12, C and D; folate, magnesium, DHA.

Lifestyle: Practice gratitude to serve as a reminder that you’re valued. Make sure to get a some “fun in the sun,” even if it’s for just 10 minutes at a time.

    Dopamine

Diet and nutrition: almonds, avocados, bananas, beef, chicken, eggs, red meat (in moderation.) Vitamins B6, A and C, protein, folate, copper, DHA, magnesium.

Lifestyle: Take on a new challenge, and make small progress on it every day. Refrain from excess alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine, as these are akin to a cheat sheet on a final exam. Moderation is key.

    Oxytocin

Diet and nutrition: (Research is skimpy here). Comfort foods (e.g., chocolate), if anything.

Lifestyle: Touch, warmth, massage, aromatherapy (potentially), intimate behaviors, sexual intercourse, gift-giving, charity.

    Endorphins

Diet and nutrition: (Questionable), but may include some chocolate and a big of ginseng.

Lifestyle: Exercise (e.g., “runners high”), scented oils, sense of humor, and plenty of laughing!

    Other great ideas

As this is an article and not a research paper, we couldn’t include everything that releases our “happy chemicals.”

Meditation (which may be the best practice), having hobbies, mindfulness, getting “out of your comfort zone,” and many other things boost certain chemicals within the brain.

(There is plenty of published stuff online [see Pinterest!] that describes how to influence your brain chemicals – just make sure to double-check the sources!)

    To your continued happiness!

    The Associated Press
FILE – In this March 15, 2016 file photo, actor George Takei attends the premiere of "Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures" in Los Angeles, Calif. "Star Trek" actor Takei has denied he groped a struggling model in 1981. Takei said Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, in a series of tweets that events described in an interview with Scott R. Brunton “simply did not occur.” He says he didn’t know “why he has claimed them now.” (Photo by Phil McCarten/Invision/AP, File)

The Latest on widening sexual harassment and abuse allegations against men in the entertainment and media industries (all times local):

      6:30 p.m.

"Supergirl" and "Arrow" showrunner Andrew Kreisberg has been suspended amid accusations of sexual harassment and inappropriate touching from 19 former and current employees.

Warner Bros. Television Group confirmed the suspension and investigation Saturday. The company says in a statement it "takes all allegations of misconduct extremely seriously." Accusations against Kreisberg first were reported by Variety, which did not identify the accusers by name, saying they feared retaliation.

Kreisberg's shows run on the CW network. He's also an executive producer of "The Flash" and "DC's Legends of Tomorrow."

His agent didn't immediately return an email seeking comment Saturday.

Kreisberg told Variety he's made comments on women's appearances and clothes in his capacity as an executive director "but they were not sexualized." He also said, like others, "I have given someone a non-sexual hug or kiss on the cheek."

      2:25 p.m.

A Los Angeles-based writer says actor Richard Dreyfuss made lewd comments to her over the course of several years and exposed himself when she was summoned to his movie set trailer.

Vulture.com reports Jessica Teich said there were continual, overt and lewd comments and invitations from Dreyfuss in the 1980s.

Dreyfuss denied he ever exposed himself to Jessica Teich but said he thought the other encounters with her were a playful "consensual seduction ritual." He acknowledged flirting with her and has said he's "horrified and bewildered to discover that it wasn't consensual."

Teich said she decided to speak out after Dreyfuss himself tweeted support for his son Harry after the younger Dreyfuss went public with accusations that Kevin Spacey groped his crotch when he was 18.

      ———

      1:15 p.m.

Attorneys for actress Paz de la Huerta say a subpoena in the Harvey Weinstein rape investigation requesting all medical treatment records from her therapist is too broad.

Court papers say investigators are seeking privileged information and she should have a chance to review it before turning it over to prosecutors.

The "Boardwalk Empire" actress told police she was raped by Weinstein twice in 2010; her therapist has said she recalled the actress telling her this. Manhattan District Attorney investigators are seeking access to the therapist's records, requesting "any and all medical treatment records."

De la Huerta's attorneys say the grand jury probe is limited to the 2010 case, and forcing her to turn over other highly personal records would be embarrassing and damaging.

      Weinstein denies the allegations.

      ———

      12:50 p.m.

Massachusetts prosecutors will meet with the son of a former Boston TV news anchor who said Kevin Spacey sexually assaulted the teenage boy at a Nantucket restaurant.

Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe told The Boston Globe on Friday the meeting "will occur soon." O'Keefe said the investigation will proceed "from there after we have a chance to speak with the person who made the allegation."

Heather Unruh told reporters Wednesday that Spacey stuck his hand down her then-18-year-old-son's pants and grabbed his genitals while the two of them were at a restaurant in July 2016. Unruh said Spacey ultimately left to use the bathroom and when he was out of sight, her son ran away.

Spacey's lawyer didn't immediately return an email seeking comment Saturday.

      ———

      12:10 p.m.

"Star Trek" actor George Takei has denied he groped a model-actor in 1981.

Takei said Saturday on Twitter that events described in an interview with Scott R. Brunton "simply did not occur."

Brunton told The Hollywood Reporter he was living in Hollywood when he met Takei at a bar. They exchanged numbers, he said, and then Takei invited him out and back to his condo after Brunton broke up with a boyfriend.

Brunton said he "must have passed out" after a drink, awaking to Takei groping him.

An audio clip surfaced from Takei's October appearance on Howard Stern's radio show where the two talked about Harvey Weinstein allegations. Stern asked Takei if he's ever grabbed anyone's genitals against their will. Takei was silent, said "uh oh" and then began laughing.

WATCH Videos show officer-involved shooting after high speed chase

Rhode Island authorities on Friday released police body camera and traffic surveillance footage as they defended the actions of officers who, a day earlier, had shot and killed a pickup truck driver and wounded his passenger after a high speed chase.

The incident began Thursday morning when a state trooper was transporting a handcuffed prisoner to court. The trooper stopped to investigate a car crash on Route 146 in Providence at approximately 9 a.m. ET. When the trooper got out of his marked cruiser, the prisoner took control of the vehicle and drove off without him, according to Rhode Island State Police.

The stolen cruiser was found about 30 minutes later abandoned on a street in the capital city. State and local authorities launched an intensive manhunt for the escaped prisoner, identified as 35-year-old Donald Morgan.

In the search for Morgan, authorities received a tip that the man was seen trying to get into a white pickup truck in the area, prompting investigating officers to pull over white pickup trucks in the city, according to Providence Police Chief Hugh T. Clements Jr.

At about 10:35 a.m., a white pickup truck sped off as a Cranston police officer attempted to pull over the vehicle, leading authorities on an intense pursuit.

The Providence Police Department released video from Rhode Island's Department of Transportation, which shows a large white pickup truck speeding up a highway, weaving through traffic and driving in a shoulder lane as police follow closely behind.

The truck darts up a ramp onto Route 95, but a police officer had stopped his vehicle ahead to block traffic and prevent the truck from escaping. Numerous police cruisers pull up behind the truck and officers with guns drawn converge on the vehicle. But the truck tries to drive forward anyway, hitting a small car stopped on the ramp and ramming it aside. An officer helped the female driver out of that car, according to the Providence police chief.

Officers jump out of the way as the truck smashes back and forth into vehicles, the driver apparently trying to force a way out.

The Providence Police Department also released footage from an officer wearing a body camera who arrives on scene as authorities begin firing shots at the truck, which has tinted windows. Thick plumes of white smoke billow into the air from the truck's spinning tires. More than 40 shots were fired by multiple officers and troopers in two separate volleys of gunfire, the police chief said.

"We believe that video shows the acts of the officers as doing exactly what we would want them to do in stopping an imminent and significant threat," Clements said Friday at a press conference to release the footage.

The video shows authorities swarming over the truck when it becomes clear it's no longer moving. One officer shouts, "Watch the passenger! Watch the passenger!"

The driver of the truck, identified as Joseph Santos, 32, was shot and killed. He was shot multiple times, according to the Providence police chief.

A female passenger in the truck, identified as Christine Demers, was hospitalized for injuries, the police chief said.

The man who stole the marked cruiser, whom authorities were initially searching for, was arrested Friday night at a residence in Cumberland, according to Rhode Island State Police. Morgan was charged with escape from custody, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, obstructing an officer in execution of duty, larceny of a motor vehicle, reckless driving and resisting arrest.

Two other people, identified as Daniel Medeiros, 54, and Rachael Read, 47, both of Cumberland, were also arrested and charged with harboring a criminal, state police said.

The Providence Police Department and Rhode Island State Police have launched a joint investigation overseen by the attorney general into Thursday's officer-involved shooting, according to Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare. The case will be presented to a grand jury, which will determine whether the use of force was justified.
