AMC's 'Dietland' Enlists 'Tangerine' Breakout Mya Taylor

The transgender actress will recur on the Marti Noxon drama and play a transgender character.

AMC's upcoming Dietland adaptation has enlisted a breakout star from Tangerine.

Actress Mya Taylor has booked a recurring role on the drama from Marti Noxon that stars Julianna Marguiles.

Set against the backdrop of the beauty industry, Dietland follows Plum Kettle (Joy Nash of The Mindy Project, Twin Peaks), an obese woman who is preparing for weight-loss surgery when her world is upturned by two rival feminist factions. Caught between old ideas and radical new extremes, Plum must decide for herself what it means to be a revolutionary as the “war of the sexes” becomes literal. Margulies stars as magazine editor Kitty.

Taylor, who made history last year when she became the first transgender winner of an Independent Spirit Award, will play Barbara, a newly minted member of the transgender community who resides at Verena Baptist's Calliope House. In addition to her Spirit Award for best supporting actress, Taylor also won the 2015 San Francisco Film Critics Circle Award in the same category.

Noxon will pen the script, executive produce and serve as showrunner. Skydance's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross will exec produce alongside Noxon's Tiny Pyro topper Maria Grasso, as well as Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn of Mockingbird Pictures and Jackie Hoyt. The drama is a co-production between AMC Studios and Skydance Television.

Taylor, repped by ICM Partners and Avalon Management, joins a Dietland cast that also includes Tramell Tillman, Robin Weigert, Will Seefried, Rowena King and Erin Darke. The series will premiere in 2018.
