Nick Cassavetes Developing Drama About Disgraced NHL Owner Bruce McNall
The project, from Almost Never Films, will chronicle the rise and fall of the L.A. Kings owner who went to jail for his part in an admitted scheme to swindle $236 million.
Nick Cassavetes is eying a first-time move into TV. The filmmaker has signed on to write a pilot for a drama based on the life of former Los Angeles Kings owner Bruce McNall.
McNall, once a self-made tycoon, owned the NHL team for a period in the 1980s and '90s — one that famously saw him bring Wayne Gretzky over from the Edmonton Oilers. McNall suffered a mighty fall, though. He defaulted on a $90 million loan in 1993 and eventually spent time in jail for his admitted role in a scheme to swindle the Kings, banks and a securities firm out of $236 million. Cassavetes' series would chronicle McNall's rise and fall.
There's not yet much else known about the potential series, save the creator and subject matter, but Almost Never Films is attached to produce alongside Howard and Karen Baldwin's Kemb Productions and Stuart Benjamin Productions.
Cassavetes comes to the project with no TV credentials but a beefy feature résumé. He has directed The Notebook, Alpha Dog and The Other Woman — among many others.
