'Mr. Robot' Renewed for Season 4 at USA Network

Hello again, friend.

Hot on the heels of a Golden Globe nomination for series star Christian Slater, and with precious few hours remaining before its season-three finale, Mr. Robot is getting a fourth-season renewal, USA Network has announced. The writers room for season four of the computer hacker thriller, created by Sam Esmail, is open. There is currently no word on when season four will air.

Set in an alternate version of 2015, Mr. Robot follows the story of Elliot Alderson (Emmy winner Rami Malek), a troubled but brilliant computer expert who launched a revolution alongside the rebellious Mr. Robot (Slater), a darker and more militant side of his own personality. Throughout the series, Elliot and Mr. Robot have been at odds with each another, so much so that the two warring sides of Elliot have been separated all through season three, which airs its finale Wednesday.

"Elliot and Mr. Robot are completely apart," Esmail previously told The Hollywood Reporter about the story of season three. "Much like how he's trying to solve the world's problems by essentially trying to pretend it never happened and go back to the way it was, he's trying to pretend Mr. Robot is no longer there, and moving on with his life. But, again, after going through the realization that he has this condition and he does have this dissociative identity disorder, can he just push it away? Or do you have to go and actually face it at some point?"

The confrontation between Elliot and Mr. Robot is set to transpire in the season-three finale, and now, we know it will continue for at least one more season. The move is a show of confidence on USA's part: Mr. Robot has seen a steady decrease in viewership over the course of season three, while simultaneously earning critical praise for a season that THR's Tim Goodman described as "must-watch again" television.

In terms of the show's future beyond season four, there's currently no word, though Esmail himself has spoken about Mr. Robot in terms of a five-season arc. Speaking again with THR, he confirmed that an end to Elliot's journey is in sight.

"I've always said it's four or five seasons, and I've said that because I think it's somewhere in between," he told THR. "Whether that means the next two seasons are two short seasons, or it could technically still be two full 10-episode seasons, we're still kind of figuring that out. It's something the writers' room and I take very seriously. We never want to feel like we're treading water. Hopefully it fits into two more seasons, but we're trying to figure out that number."

The season-three finale of Mr. Robot airs tonight at 10 p.m. ET. Tune in to THR for full coverage of the series, including an interview with Esmail following the season-three finale, a final round of the weekly column with writer-producer Kor Adana and more.

Calm down everyone. #MrRobot season_4.0 writers' room is officially open for business.
