Apple Renews 'Carpool Karaoke' for Second Season

'Carpool Karaoke'

The first season of the 'Late Late Show' spinoff debuted last summer.

Apple has given a second season to James Corden's Carpool Karaoke, CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves announced on Thursday.

The music variety show was developed as a spinoff to the popular segment on Corden's Late Late Show, which airs nightly on CBS. The first season began streaming via Apple Music last summer, featuring such guests as Alicia Keys, John Legend, Blake Shelton and Camila Cabello.

Speaking on a conference call with investors, Moonves cited Carpool Karaoke and Stephen Colbert's animated showtime series, Our Cartoon President, as examples of how the popularity of CBS' late night hosts has translated into new projects.

Carpool Karaoke was one of Apple's first forays into original programming. The tech giant also debuted reality series Planet of the Apps last summer. Since these shows were ordered, Apple has switched gears, hiring Sony TV veterans Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht to oversee worldwide video programming. They have quickly assembled a slate of high-profile, premium TV projects including anthology series Amazing Stories and a Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston morning television drama.

Carpool Karaoke remains separate from Van Amburg and Erlicht's television efforts. Because of its music focus, it is seen as additive to the streaming music library that Apple has amassed for it $10-per-month Apple Music streaming service.

An Apple spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the Carpool Karaoke renewal.

Carpool Karaoke still remains a regular segment on Late Late Show, with Kelly Clarkson the most recent guest.Corden's two-year-old interview with Adele is the most-watched video on the Late Late Show YouTube channel, with 177 million total views.
